Our feet connect us to the ground, moving us around and taking us wherever we need to go. When our feet ache, it can often affect other areas of the body. Not only is foot pain noticeable, but it’s also often unbearable, as we use our feet every day. Come to New York Foot Experts to find relief with custom-made orthotics!
Custom-made specifically for you, orthotics are the special shoes or heel inserts a doctor prescribes.
To treat foot, leg, or back problems, a doctor may prescribe orthotics.
Usually having to do with pain and discomfort of the feet and legs, orthotics can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan to address various symptoms. Some of the objectives doctors may have for orthotic treatment include:
⦁ correcting foot deformities
⦁ helping the foot or ankle function better
⦁ providing support to the ankle
⦁ reducing the risks of further injuries
Most custom orthotics will last one to five years, although there is no strict timeline. Their appearance and how often they are used determine if they need replacement.
Pain – It may be time to replace your orthotics if you experience any type of pain, whether it is in the back, feet, or ankles. While standing, jogging, or even jumping in your orthotics, you should not experience pain. Also, you should not be experiencing pain from calluses or corns, which are signs your feet have been rubbing inside your shoe.
Age – Most orthotics will last one to five years. You usually only need a replacement every three to five years if your custom orthotics were made from hard plastic. However, they may need replacement every year if they are made from soft plastic or foam.
Use – If you use orthotics for sports and recreational activities, they will wear out faster than if you use them to get around or just for your day-to-day activities. For example, activities like jogging wear down your orthotics quicker than wearing them each day while at work.
Wear or Damage – If you take a look at your orthotics and you see any cracks, broken pieces, or the soles have worn thin, it is time to replace them.
Shoes – Including alignment of your body, orthotics are meant to correct any deformities in your feet. Examining your shoes can tell you if there are any indications of uneven wear.
Changes – Significant lifestyle changes will often require new custom orthotics. For example, you may need new orthotics to accommodate the changes in your body if you have had knee surgery, become pregnant, etc.
It is not uncommon to require break-in times for new adaptations. Your body will typically take 2-3 weeks to get used to your new orthotics. During this period of time, we ask that you follow these simple rules to have the best transition:
⦁ Start by wearing your orthotics 2-3x each day.
⦁ On the first day, wear your orthotics for 30 minutes each time you wear them.
⦁ Extend the time you wear them by 15-30 minutes until you can comfortably wear your orthotics all day, every day during all activities.
Take the orthotics off and allow your feet to rest for several hours before wearing them again if your feet become sore and/or tired while wearing your orthotics. After 3 weeks, if your feet continue to be sore and/or tired from wearing your orthotics, they may need to be adjusted. We can help too if you have gotten your orthotics from a different source.
